GRATITUDE OR LACK OF

The story is told of two old friends bumped into one another on the street one day. One of them looked forlorn, almost on the verge of tears. His friend asked, "What has the world done to you, my old friend?"

The sad fellow said, "Let me tell you. Three weeks ago, an uncle died and left me forty thousand dollars."

"That’s a lot of money."

"But, two weeks ago, a cousin I never even knew died, and left me eighty-five thousand free and clear."

"Sounds like you’ve been blessed...."

"You don’t understand!" he interrupted. "Last week my great-aunt passed away. I inherited almost a quarter of a million."

Now the friend was really confused. "Then, why do you look so down?"

"This week... nothing!"

What a picture of the the “entitlement mindset” that has permeated American society at almost every level. We have been blessed to live in a land of plenty; as a result, we become complacent and many times we are completely unwilling to give thanks to anyone for anything.

GOD HELP US!

WHAT ARE YOUR ACTIONS SAYING

Several years ago in Chicago, police had a warrant for the arrest of a man named Daron. The police stopped Daron as he left an apartment complex in area of town known for drug trafficking. The police asked the man his name. Daron claimed that his name was John Henry Jones. There was only one problem. Daron had a tattoo on his arm that said “Daron.” The police pointed to the tattoo, but Daron claimed that it was the name of his girlfriend. Needless to say, the police could not be snookered and took him into custody.
What we are is written into the very fabric of our being.  You are not what you say, but what you do. Actions speak so loud. You may say one thing, but what does your life say?
If it waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is duck.

TRUE HERO OF THE TITANIC

John Harper was born to a pair of solid Christian parents on May 29th, 1872. It was on the last Sunday of March 1886, when he was thirteen years old that he received Jesus as the Lord of his life. He never knew what it was to "sow his wild oats." He began to preach about four years later at the ripe old age of 17 years old by going down to the streets of his village and pouring out his soul in earnest entreaty for men to be reconciled to God.

As John Harper's life unfolded, one thing was apparent...he was consumed by the Word of God. When asked by various ministers what his doctrine consisted of, he was known to reply "The Word of God!" After five or six years of toiling on street corners preaching the gospel and working in the mill during the day, Harper was taken in by Rev. E. A. Carter of Baptist Pioneer Mission in London, England. This set Harper free to devote his whole time of energy to the work so dear to his heart. Soon, John Harper started his own church in September of 1896. (Now known as the Harper Memorial Church.) This church which John Harper had started with just 25 members, had grown to over 500 members when he left 13 years later.

During this time he had gotten married, but was shortly there after widowed. However brief the marriage, God did bless John Harper with a beautiful little girl named Nana.Ironically, John Harper almost drowned several times during his life. When he was two and a half years of age, he almost drowned when he fell into a well but was resuscitated by his mother. At the age of Twenty-six,he was swept out to sea by a reverse current and barely survived, and at thirty-two he faced death on a leaking ship in the Mediterranean. Perhaps, God used these experiences to prepare this servant for what he faced next.

It was the night of April 14, 1912. The Titanic sailed swiftly on the bitterly cold ocean waters heading unknowingly into the pages of history. On board this luxurious ocean liner were many rich and famous people. At the time of the ship's launch, it was the world's largest man-made moveable object. At 11:40 p.m. on that fateful night, an iceberg scraped the ship's starboard side, showering the decks with ice and ripping open six watertight compartments. The sea poured in. On board the ship that night was John Harper and his much-beloved six-year- old daughter Nana. According to documented reports, as soon as it was apparent that the ship was going to sink, John Harper immediately took his daughter to a lifeboat. It is reasonable to assume that this widowed preacher could have easily gotten on board this boat to safety; however, it never seems to have crossed his mind. He bent down and kissed his precious little girl; looking into her eyes he told her that she would see him again someday. The flares going off in the dark sky above reflected the tears on his face as he turned and headed towards the crowd of desperate humanity on the sinking ocean liner. As the rear of the huge ship began to lurch upwards, it was reported that Harper was seen making his way up the deck yelling, "Women, children and unsaved into the lifeboats!" It was only minutes later that the Titanic began to rumble deep within. Most people thought it was an explosion; actually the gargantuan ship was literally breaking in half. At this point, many people jumped off the decks and into the icy, dark waters below. John Harper was one of these people. That night 1528 people went into the frigid waters. John Harper was seen swimming frantically to people in the water leading them to Jesus before the hypothermia became fatal. Mr. Harper swam up to one young Man who had climbed up on a piece of debris. Rev. Harper asked him between breaths, "Are you saved?" The young man replied that he was not. Harper then tried to lead him to Christ only to have the young man who was near shock, reply no.

John Harper then took off his life jacket and threw it to the man and said "Here then, you need this more than I do..." and swam away to other people. A few minutes later Harper swam back to the young man and succeeded in leading him to salvation.

Of the 1528 people that went into the water that night, six were rescued by the lifeboats. One of them was this young man on the debris. Four years later, at a survivors meeting, this young man stood up and in tears recounted how that after John Harper had led him to Christ. Mr. Harper had tried to swim back to help other people, yet because of the intense cold, had grown too weak to swim. His last words before going under in the frigid waters were "Believe on the Name of the Lord Jesus and you will be saved."

Does Hollywood remember this man? No.

While other people were trying to buy their way onto the lifeboats and selfishly trying to save their own lives, John Harper gave up his life so that others could be saved. John Harper was truly the hero of the Titanic!

ENCOURAGE OTHERS

1 Samuel 23:16 - And Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.

There was a young boy who was trying out for  a part in the school play.  His mother knew that he had  a slim  chance in getting a part.

When the day came that he was to find out if he got a  part or not  arrived,  his mother dreaded picking  him up from  school.  As she sat in her car in the  school parking lot, she   spotted him coming her way with his eyes shining with  excitement.

He opened the car door and  said, "Mother, you won't believe it.  I got a part!"

She said, "Son, what part were you chosen for?"

He  said, "I've been chosen to clap and cheer."

Who have you encouraged today?  Why not determine to be a Jonathan!

PUMPKIN PATCH AND AN OAK TREE

A gentleman, lying in the shade of an oak tree, was gazing on a pumpkin vine with its large swelling fruit. Suddenly he looked into the oak tree, and on seeing an acorn, said, “Had I been the Creator, I would have hung the pumpkin upon the tall oak. It’s more suitable to bear it.”

Just then an acorn fell on his face. “Had that been a pumpkin,” he thought, “it not only would have been unwise but also unmerciful.”

Gods ways are always better than our ways.

Isaiah 55:9 - For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

I DID NOT LOSE IT; I GAVE IT

Canadian author William D. Matheson, in “My Grandfather’s  War,” tells of a veteran who walked through the streets of his hometown with an empty sleeve. When a passerby commented on the loss of his arm, the veteran replied, “Losing implies that I do not know where it went. I didn’t lose it. I gave it.”

How well that describes what Jesus did for us. He didn’t lose His life on the cross, He gave it. Jesus willingly took our place at Calvary. He suffered and died in our place.

II Corinthians 5:21 - For he hath made him to be sin FOR US, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

ARE YOUR KNEES WORN OUT

On February 26, 1829, a Jewish boy named Loeb Strauss was born in a cottage in the Bavarian village of Buttenheim.  As a young man, Loeb changed his name to Levi and wound up in California where he opened a textile company in San Francisco.  One day a gold miner walked into Levi’s shop and assailed the young merchant.

“Look at these,” said the miner, pointing to his pants.  “I bought’em six months ago, and now they’re full of holes!”

When Levi asked why, the miner explained, “We work on our knees most of the time.”

“What you need is some really strong material,” replied Levi. “We have some canvas.  It’s used to make tents.  If we make your trousers out of canvas, I’m sure they won’t get holes.”

A tailor was called, and presently the miner had a set of trousers—and the rest is history.  Soon miners across the West were wearing Levi Strauss’s jeans.

It would seem that Christians should have the same problem that plagued that miner.  We should be doing more work on our knees.

Hudson Taylor once said, "You move forward on your knees."

Could it be that the reason we are so worn out from life is that our knees are not!

God will supply that for which we have KNEE'D.

A CHRISTIAN HOME

After the dedication of his baby brother in church, little Johnny sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong.

Finally the boy replied, "That pastor said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I want to stay with you guys!"

There is the person your children knows, and there is the person everyone else knows.

Isaiah the prophet in   2   Kings 20:15 asked Hezekiah the king, "And he said, What have they seen in thine house? "  What are your children beholding in your house? Is there enough evidence to convince them that you are a Christian?

THE APPEARANCE OF RELIGION ONLY ON SUNDAY PROVES THAT IT IS ONLY AN APPEARANCE.

THE REAL LOSER

School was out for the summer, and Ronnie decided that he needed to make some money. Waking up early one morning he went to the berry fields and spent most of the day picking pails of beautiful, tasty blueberries. His Dad took him into town where he decided to go from door to door to sell his produce.

When the lady of the house opened the door, he politely asked, "Would you like to buy some berries, Ma'am?"

"Yes," she answered. "I'll take your pail into the kitchen and measure two quarts and bake a delicious pie."

Ronnie decided to stay outside and play with their big dog. Puzzled, the woman asked, "Don't you want to come inside and see that I measure your berries right? How do you know I'm not going to cheat you?"

Petting the dog, Ronnie said, "Oh, I'm not afraid of your cheating me. You'd get the worst of the deal."

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"I'd just lose my berries," he answered, "but you'd make yourself a thief!"

Temptation is ever before us and always around us. It never leaves us and always confronts us. But we need not give in! God will always provide us with an escape route.

1 Corinthians 10:13 - There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Spiritual men are not so much afraid of trials as they are of temptations. The great horror of a Christian is sin.

A RICH FATHER

Baron Rothschild, a member of the world-famous family of financiers, stepped from a carriage one evening and gave the driver what he felt was an adequate tip.
Looking at the tip disdainfully, the driver said, “Your lordship’s son always gives me a good deal more than this.”

“I dare say he does,” Baron Rothschild snapped. “But then, you see, he has a rich father; I haven’t.”

The Baron made an excellent point. When you have a father with plentiful resources to depend on, you don’t have to worry about giving too much!
My Father is rich in houses and lands,
He holdeth the wealth of the world in his hands!
Of rubies and diamonds, of silver and gold,
His coffers are full, he has riches untold.

I'm the child of a King, the child of a King,

With Jesus, my Saviour, I'm the child of a King.
Psalms 50:10,12  - For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

NOT SO BRIGHT

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to  his customer, "This is the dumbest kid in the world.  Watch  while I prove it to you."

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters  in the other,  then calls the boy over and asks, "Which do  you want, son?"

The boy takes the quarters and leaves."What did I tell you?" said the barber. "That kid never learns!"

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. "Son, may I ask you a  simple question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?"

The boy licked his ice cream cone and answered, "Because the day I take the dollar, the game will be  over."

BE CAREFUL HOW YOU JUDGE OTHERS BECAUSE YOU MIGHT BE JUDGING YOUR SELF!

IMMEDIATELY

“And beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him.”

There was no time lapse between Peter’s call to Christ for help when sinking, and Jesus saving him. And there is no interval between the time when we ask Him to forgive us for sins committed, and Him doing it.

"For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee." How little we know of our dear Lord’s love, mercy, and grace. Is this not because we have envisioned Him to be, altogether such a one as ourselves?

Joseph’s brothers had sinned against him in a despicable way, but they had asked his forgiveness. This he instantly did, graciously granting their request. At a latter time however, they once again asked his forgiveness, in reference to the same incident. Upon hearing this we are told, “And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.” How it must grieve our precious Saviour’s heart when we emulate this type of unbelief in His Word of promise to us.

GOD LOVES YOU

My granddaughter recently told here mother than God had given her a message for her. When asked what it was God wanted her to tell her, she responded with a deep voice that God wanted me to tell you that He loves you.

My friend, we all need to keep ourselves in the love of God as Jude tells us in short epistle. Jude is not talking about your love for God; he is talking about God's love for you.  You are to keep yourself in HIS love!

    God never quits loving you.

Charles Spurgeon once visited the home one of one of members. When he arrived he noticed on top of the the barn a weather vane inscribed with the words, "GOD IS LOVE." Spurgeon looked at the man and asked, “Do you mean to imply that God’s love changes like the wind?”

The man quickly replied, “Oh, no, that’s not the message at all. THE MESSAGE IS THAT GOD LOVES YOU NO MATTER WHICH WAY THE WIND IS BLOWING!”

By the way, my wife told our daughter, that there may come a time when you may want to ask your little girl what was God message for you again!

God said in Jeremiah 31:3 “Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love.”

WATCH YOUR PRIDE

Once there was a woodpecker pecking on a tree when a bolt of lightning struck the tree and split it right down the middle.   The woodpecker flew away but returned in a few minutes with three of his friends and said, "There it is gentlemen, look at what I did."

Many there are who desire to impress others. Many there are today who want others to think that they were something they are not. This was the sin of the Pharisees  during the days of the Lord's ministry upon the earth.

Things have not changed. There are many today who are more concerned about their reputation than they are character. Reputation is what people think you are; character is what God knows you are.

Take care of your character, and your reputation will take care of itself.

The old Testament prophet Obadiah said,  "The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee."

THOUGHT TO PONDER

MOST PEOPLE SPEND MONEY THEY DON'T HAVE TO BUY THINGS THEY DON'T WANT TO IMPRESS PEOPLE THEY DON'T LIKE!
